Printer not found on Android: what to try

Updated October 30, 2026

If your printer does not appear when you tap Print, work through these checks in order. Most problems are fixed by the first three.

1. Same network

The phone and the printer must be on the same Wi-Fi network. A guest network, a 5 GHz network the printer cannot join, or mobile data on the phone will hide the printer. Turn Wi-Fi on and mobile data off, then try again.

2. Printer on and ready

Turn the printer on, check that it shows a Wi-Fi connection, and clear any error on its screen. Restarting the printer and your router fixes many connection problems.

3. Default Print Service

Open Android settings and search for Printing (it is often under Connected devices). Make sure Default Print Service is turned on. In PrintHop, Printer help has a button that opens these settings.

4. Install a print plugin

Printers that do not support standard wireless printing may need the maker’s print plugin or the Mopria Print Service from Google Play. Install it, open Printing settings and turn it on.

5. Try Wi-Fi Direct

Many printers can create their own Wi-Fi network. Connect your phone to it and try again. Check the printer’s manual for how to turn Wi-Fi Direct on.

6. Add the printer by address

In Android’s Default Print Service settings you can add a printer by its IP address. The printer’s network settings page shows the address.

What is not supported

Printers that connect only by USB cable or Bluetooth cannot be reached from Android’s standard print screen, and no app can promise to print to every printer.

Frequently asked questions

Why can my phone find the printer in one app but not another?

All apps use the same Android print service, so the list should match. If it does not, close the print screen and open it again to refresh the search.

Do I need to install an app from my printer’s maker?

Usually not for recent printers. Older printers may need the maker’s print plugin.
